　　“奥林斯先生，请回答这样一个问题：‘沃利·奥林斯(Wally Olins)是谁？’”
　　“我就是我——我所想的、我所说的、我所做的。”英国品牌大师沃利·奥林斯如此解读自己，这和他对于标识(Identity)的界定几乎如出一辙。在奥林斯看来，标识的作用正是解答以下问题——“你想成为什么？你想表达什么？还有，你想做什么？”
　　“品牌是商业赐予大众文化最宝贵的礼物。”奥林斯认为，品牌正在走出它的发祥地——商业领域，进而对社会和文化产生无法估量的影响。
　　曾几何时，品牌所能够代表的只是些琐碎的日常用品，比如肥皂、茶叶、洗衣粉、鞋油等等。在那种状态下，品牌是诚信的象征，在假冒伪劣产品横行、商业信用缺失、价格随意波动的年代，品牌象征着符合标准的质量、数量和价格。标识折射并维持着品牌的形象。
　　时过境迁，产品的基本标准已经不是问题，消费者无需再对产品功能心存疑虑。“品牌仍然是形象的代表，只是它不仅代表公司的形象，而且代表了我们消费者的形象。”奥林斯说。
　　在奥林斯看来，今天的品牌是个人价值取向的外在表现。品牌让我们可以向周围的世界展示自己，并立即为人所理解。迪索(Diesel)、阿迪达斯(Adidas)、W饭店是一种生活方式，而爱马仕(Hermes)、拉尔夫·劳伦(Ralph Lauren)和里兹(Ritz)饭店则是另一种生活方式。人们可以搭配各种品牌来表现自己的个性。
　　品牌的理念早已走出它的发祥地——商业领域，开始对社会和文化产生无法估量的影响。它已经渗透到教育、体育、时尚、旅游、艺术、文学以及你能想到的任何区域。越来越多的非盈利组织和慈善机构开始采用品牌去争夺人们心中的情感高地。这足以解释一个在前人看来怪异无比而我们早已司空见惯的现象——全世界无论哪块大陆、哪个国家的人们，从头到脚的服装鞋帽上挂满了在他们看来与自己密切相关的标识——软饮料、跑鞋、手机、雪橇、球队、学校等等。
　　“大品牌能够横扫天下，它们的精神遍布世界每一个角落。它们几乎无所不能、无处不在。”在奥林斯眼中，迪士尼(Disney)、可口可乐(Coca Cola)、麦当劳(McDonald s)、耐克(Nike)正凭借情感元素席卷全球，力图占领尽可能大的领地、征服尽可能多的人群。美国运动员之所以穿上耐克跑鞋，是因为他觉得这双鞋不仅能让自己发挥得更加出色，还是自己的时尚代言。
　　然而，大多数买耐克鞋的人根本不跑步，他们穿上它纯粹为了炫耀。冈比亚班珠尔机场的一名清洁工辛勤劳作，用积攒下来的薪水买了一双耐克球鞋，多是为了昭示众人，他也能分享这份魅力与时尚。对他而言，耐克“钩子”的象征意义超过了那双鞋子物理上的功能。品牌将商品变成了符号。
　　对于许多中国公司而言，“品牌”依然是一个新兴的名词。20年前，在平面设计的工作流程里还找不到品牌塑造(Branding)一项。当时，与之相对应的环节只有标志设计(Logo Design)和商标设计(Trademark Design)，为公司设计形象也仅局限于在信纸或信封上加印厂牌。这两项工作在后来发展成为完善的企业标识系统(Corporate Identity System)。在欧美，标识设计辅以应用系统，已经从企业形象的设计，演变为管理品牌资产的重要手段。
　　“许多企业正在将他们的立足点从制造和销售转变为创造一整套价值观。”奥林斯认为，在这种情况下，品牌可以与其初始服务或产品相分离，“很多大品牌甚至能像变形虫和橡皮泥那样，扭曲变形却依然被识别出来。”原先印在烟盒上的万宝路(Marlboro)牛仔居然又出现在他们的服装上面，而保时捷(Porsche)和宝马(BMW)也在制造着类似的事情。
　　“世界充满喧嚣与困惑，这使得我们难以作出理性的选择。而品牌代表着明确、诚信、不变——所有有助于人们确立自我的东西。”奥林斯说。
